Yesterday, I traded in seven games at Game, games that I thought were mostly bad games, this got me wondering as to what makes a good game? I guess I could answer this by remembering what I hated about the games I traded in. The games I traded in were: Bioshock, Skate, Grand Theft Auto 4, Assassin’s Creed, Ninja Gaiden 2 and a couple of others I can’t remember the names of.

Bioshock

Bioshock was a great game, it had no major flaws, a couple of annoyances like it was really hard to find ammunition or money to buy ammunition. The makers of the game decided to implement a “hacking” system, this was nothing more than connecting a few pipes together to allow a liquid to pass from end to another before the liquid seeped out, this part of the game became tedious and very repetitive.

Skate

This game was very hard since in order to perform any tricks you had to do a mind numbingly complicated sequence using the right analog stick and press a combination of 4 buttons, moving around the Skate world consisted of trying not to get hit by a car, crash into what seemed like non-existing objects.

Grand Theft Auto 4

GTA4 suffers with poor car handling (which for a game about cars is a major problem) which kind of feels like you’re driving a speedboat around New York City. GTA 4 feels like you haven’t really achieved anything after playing it for 20 hours, GTA4 introduced a new thing into the franchise mini-games and socialising, the mini-games and socialising aspect of the game was tedious as it requires you to do the most boring of tasks, why isn’t a game just about blowing things up and killing people?

I could go on and on about the game I traded in and all their faults, but I wont, instead I’ll list what I think helps to create a good game.

A sense of achievment

Progression of difficulty

Good game play

Good use of cameras

Good use of controls

There’s probably a few things I’m missing from my list, but I’ll have fun adding them during this year, when I make my game.

Anyone that’s known me for any period of time know there are a few things about me that I really enjoy, Apple computers and Stephen Fry’s documentaries, both of which have genius.

I went in to the Apple store in Leicester today with a friend because he wanted to buy a new MacBook (which look amazing), during the time it took the guys to complete the sale, I was stood at the genius bar and I overheard a few “geniuses” trying to figure out the problems of those who had somehow broken their own computers/ipods/iphones. One genius, we’ll call him Brian because I did find out his actual name. Brian somehow managed to baffle the guy he was trying to help out, who had a JavaScript issue with Safari, at first he tried to convince him that it was a some problem or another, then he came closer to the actual problem and told him that since http://apple.com uses Java to do their search. As most people will know, Java would never be used to do a simple search engine on a massive site like Apple.

But then everything clicked into place and I no longer regard Apple Geniuses as Geniuses, sure a couple of them may very well be Geniuses, but on the whole, they’re just monkeys whom Apple have decided are “the chosen ones”
